A recent customized Masumi Ring, here with a 0.51ct Old European Cut White Diamond. Fitted with its own Masumi Contour Band. This diamond stole my heart! You can’t tell when it’s set, but it’s not perfectly round. Hand-cut Old European Diamonds were popular from the 1880s through the 1920s, after the invention of the bruting machine. This machine allowed diamond cutters to achieve greater symmetry in rounds but they were still only as perfect as the human hand that touched it. You’ll notice specific characteristics in OECs that make them so charming: open culets (the little peephole in the center), smaller tables, and steeper angles around the crown. As tools, lighting, and technology progressed, so did precision. From there came the Transitional Cut, then the Modern Round Brilliant.
